About Kanheri caves
Located in the heart of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali, a suburban area of Mumbai, Kanheri caves is a Buddhist historical site. This sites have up to 109 caves that were built during the different phases between 1st CE to 11th CE. The caves have been carved from basaltic hill. They were primarily built as a 'vihars' (a Buddhist resident). This were used by the Buddhist monk as a learning center during the Hinayana and later Mahayana phase. On the wall of this caves are sculpted various symbols and manisfestation of Buddhism. Among them the sculpture of Avalokiteshwar is of prime importance and one can find this sculpture in most of the cave along with the sculpture of vrikshikas.

Stupa is a solid domical structure that is built on the relics (remains) of the Buddhist monks and have ambulatory passage. The stupa is considered sacred and all those stupas in the world are built since ancient times. Kanheri caves have three stupas that can be seen when one enters the kanheri caves premises.
